Face Oils Explained – The Chemist’s Guide to Composition, Benefits, Skin Types & Smart Layering (Plus Who Should Skip Them)
1. Revealing the Composition of Face Oils
Most quality face oils are 100% plant-derived — with no water, no fillers, and no preservatives, just pure oils. Their typical composition includes:
- Carrier oils (the main base, usually 90–99%): Jojoba, grape seed, hazelnut, macadamia, coconut, rosehip, almond, and others. These supply essential fatty acids (omega-3, -6, and -9) that help repair the skin barrier. Each oil also brings its own unique profile of vitamins and antioxidants.
- Antioxidants, extracts & infused oils: Vitamin E (tocopherol) to prevent oxidation, plus beneficial plant extracts for added skin support.
- Essential oils or botanicals (in tiny amounts): These provide natural scent and targeted beauty benefits.
The best face oils are cold-pressed, unrefined, and preferably organic, so the delicate fatty acids and antioxidants remain potent. Heavily refined or low-quality oils often feel greasy and lose effectiveness.
You can choose a single-ingredient oil (such as pure rosehip) or a thoughtfully blended formula containing multiple oils, extracts, and/or essential oils.
❓Are they natural? Most are, but if synthetic fragrances are added, they are no longer 100% natural.
❓Are they organic? It depends entirely on the quality of ingredients the manufacturer chooses.

2. Benefits of Face Oils – Why You Should Consider Using Them
Face oils don’t “add” water like a moisturiser does. Instead, they work smarter by:
- Locking in moisture: They form an occlusive barrier that dramatically reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), helping to soften and protect your skin — especially useful in Auckland’s dry, windy climate.
- Repairing the skin barrier: The fatty acids rebuild the lipid layer damaged by pollution, UV exposure, and harsh weather.
- Delivering targeted actives: Antioxidants fight free radicals, reduce redness, and support collagen production.
- Calming and balancing: Anti-inflammatory compounds soothe sensitivity and can even help regulate oil production over time (yes, even for combination skin).
- Improving texture and glow: With consistent use, skin appears plumper, softer, and more luminous.
Science supports this: lipids similar to those naturally found in your skin restore barrier function more effectively than many creams used alone.
3. Which Skin Types Benefit Most from Face Oils – And What They Actually Provide
Face oils are not one-size-fits-all, but they shine for many skin concerns:
|
Skin Type |
Should You Use Face Oil? |
What the Oil Provides |
|
Dry / Dehydrated |
Yes – choose richer oils |
Deep nourishment + barrier repair |
|
Mature / Fine lines |
Yes – richer oils work best |
Plumps skin, boosts elasticity, fights oxidative stress |
|
Sensitive / Reactive |
Yes – look for calming, anti-inflammatory oils (best at night) |
Soothes redness, strengthens the fragile barrier |
|
Normal / Combination |
Yes, but use sparingly (2–3 times per week) |
Light hydration without heaviness |
|
Oily / Acne-prone |
Use cautiously – only lightweight, non-comedogenic oils (e.g. jojoba, grapeseed) |
Can help balance sebum when used sparingly |
In short: if your skin feels tight, flaky, or dull after cleansing, an oil will usually make a visible difference within 1–2 weeks.

4. How to Use and Combine Face Oils Correctly (The Advice Most Brands Skip)
Many people make simple mistakes with face oils. Here’s what you need to know:
❗Use the right amount: Only 2–4 drops are enough. Oils are highly spreadable — using too much prevents full absorption and can leave skin looking greasy.
❗Apply on damp skin if using oil alone: The slight moisture helps the oil absorb better.
When layering with other products, always follow the rule: thinnest to thickest texture.
Morning or night routine example:
- Cleanser
- Serums (vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, etc.)
- Moisturiser (delivers water-based hydration — you can skip this if your serum is rich enough)
- Face oil — warm 2–3 drops between your palms and press gently onto face, neck, and décolleté
The oil acts like a protective blanket, sealing everything underneath.
5. For Whom Face Oils Are NOT 👎 the Best Choice
Oils are not suitable for everyone. Consider skipping or using very cautiously if:
- You have very oily, acne-prone skin and the oil is heavy or comedogenic (coconut, olive, or palm oils are common culprits).
- You have a known allergy to any plant oils or botanicals (rare, but always do a 24-hour patch test on your inner arm).
- You’re using strong actives like high-dose retinoids or AHAs/BHAs and notice irritation — simplify or use oil only at night.
- Your skin is already perfectly balanced and you prefer a matte finish — a light gel moisturiser may be enough.
If unsure, start with a tiny amount every other night and listen to your skin.
⚠️ Important safety rules: ⚠️
- Never apply skincare products too close to the eyes (unless specifically formulated and tested for that area).
- Always use clean hands (wash with soap first).
- Never apply skincare on open wounds, active acne, or broken skin unless the product is designed for it.
Ready to Try? 💫
I create both of my face oils in small batches right here in Auckland and sell them exclusively through my online store.
Floral Face Oil – specially formulated for gentle soothing, calming, and barrier protection. It is not 100% natural because I blended pure plant oils with a naturally derived lightweight emollient (coco-caprylate) and alpha-bisabolol (a nature-identical compound also found in chamomile). This gives an ultra-light texture that absorbs quickly without any greasy feel. Far from being “bad” for your skin, this smart combination is highly effective for those who want something light yet nourishing.
Vitamin Q10 & Marula Elixir Face Oil – 100% natural and fragrance-free. This rich formula delivers fatty acids, antioxidants, and deeply hydrating oils known for their plumping and protective benefits. I added coenzyme Q10 for extra support against wrinkles and stressed skin. Get ready for a beautiful natural glow!
