Fizzy Bath Bombs & Shower Steamers: What's Really Going On (And How to Make Your Own at Home)
Evenings are getting cooler, and suddenly all I want is a hot bath with something that fizzes like crazy and smells like pure relaxation… or a quick morning shower that wakes me up with menthol steam.
But then I catch myself thinking: are those fancy shop bath bombs actually natural? Is the price tag really worth it? And what even makes them fizz like that?
Here’s the quick, no-scary-chemistry version:
Why do they fizz like mad?
It’s just a super simple kitchen reaction:
- citric acid (from lemons or the powder you buy) +
- baking soda (the same stuff you use for baking) + a splash of water =
- boom! Carbon dioxide gas, water, and salt are produced.
DID YOU KNOW Hot water makes it fizz faster (molecules move quicker = more collisions), cold water slows it down – you can literally do a fun experiment at home.

Natural vs. synthetic – where’s the catch?
- 100% natural version: just baking soda, citric acid, coconut or sunflower oil, and dried lavender buds (or other real botanicals).
- Most shop-bought ones: often include “Fragrance” or “Parfum” (usually synthetic scent blends), mica powders with tiny amounts of artificial colours (even below 0.01%), or even extra foaming agents (like SLS), or cheap fillers.
Lots of people assume “natural = always safe”, but that’s not quite true – even some basic bath bombs with fragrance can be fine, but you never know exactly what’s in them.
Quick & easy home recipe (beginner-friendly)
Basic bath bomb (makes 2 medium ones, ~240 g total)
Ingredients:
- 156 g baking soda
- 65 g citric acid
- 15 g coconut or sunflower oil
- 10–20 drops essential oil (lavender for calm, eucalyptus for wake-up) – choose pure essential if you want truly natural
Steps (5 min work + 24 h drying):
- Mix dry ingredients in a bowl.
- Add oils, mix with hands (gloves are smart).
- Keep mixing until it clumps like wet sand. If too dry, spritz a tiny bit of water or isopropyl alcohol.
- Pack tightly into moulds (silicone ball moulds or muffin tins work great).
- Leave to dry 24 hours – done!
Shower steamers – the no-bath hero
Shower steamers are basically bath bombs with a twist: slower dissolving, less nourishing stuff, focused purely on aroma. The scent is 10× stronger because warm steam disperses essential oils instantly in that steamy space.
People have known the power of aromatherapy forever – vanilla can satisfy cravings, rosemary wakes you up, lavender calms, menthol gives that cool open-airways feeling, eucalyptus/peppermint clear sinuses.
Same recipe, but less oil (4 g), more essential oil (3–5 g). Shape into small tablets, pop on your shower shelf – instant spa!

If you’d rather just buy ready-made (I get it – life with kids is hectic), I’ve got ready-made ones in my shop.
But if you feel like a little experiment, give it a go – your first homemade fizz is always the most satisfying (and perfect for an Instagram story 😄).
Which one would you try first – lavender for cosy nights or citrus/eucalyptus for energising mornings?
